Lancashire born and based artist John Baldwin is one of the technically innovate painters practising today.  He has shown with The Tate, Adidas and by invitation of the Cambridge of the East, Jiao Tong University, Shanghai.
Baldwin was one of very few artists in the 1960s to travel to the US and experience American Expressionism firsthand. Returning to England and finding a lack of commercially available paint to develop his style, he set about making his own colour range of acrylics in a very high colour key.
His use of metallic colour and highly pigmented gels and resins was a further step away from traditional oil painting, following the likes of Jackson Pollock and Joan Mitchell in their use of household gloss and matt paints.
Baldwin’s work in an English Art historical context is close to the art of Albert Irvin, John Hoyland and Howard Hodgkin – the boldness of the colour and composition is instantly recognisable.
