Marilyn Bailey studied Fashion and Design at Saint Martins School of Art, London from 1969 to 1972, returning to Saint Martins to study painting and filmmaking in 1973.   She later taught at Saint Martins and Goldsmiths College and art schools in the Midlands and Surrey.  Her first painting exhibition was in 1975 at the National Theatre, London.

She travelled widely with her filmmaking programs and has been awarded numerous Arts Council Grants for Filmmaking and Painting.  During 90’s her expressive acrylic and pastel paintings were exhibited at Henley on Thames, Petworth House, and other venues.

A Year of the Artist Residency in 2000 to explore Italian Renaissance paintings led her to explore realist techniques and she began attending painting workshops in Italy.

2010 marked the commencement of four years full time training at the Angel Academy, Florence to study Classical Realist painting.  Since returning she has favoured the informality of opening her own studio while continuing with Still Life and Portrait pieces.

Her paintings have been exhibited and sold widely in England and Italy, she lives and works in a rural Surrey village and portraits commissions include the Dean of Guildford Cathedral and life size works of Mayfair art dealer René Gimpel’s family.
